I need to impliment this option. How hard would it be to code this into a module? If I knew (had a basic understanding even) how to try to code this into a module as a contribution I would. Can anybody help??

What we actually need to do is to implement a mechanism for the customer to select a manufacturer from those available and only have the categories and products for that manufacturer displayed throughout.

This is on our list of features scheduled for future releases.

I agree - I think that is an excellent option. My BF (business format) will probably exceed 100,000 parts - easily 20,000 with a couple of manufacturers.
One idea: Give the option in admin of:
   A) home page displays - Best Sellers, or Recently added or etc.
or B) home page displays - select catagory to view
or C) home page displays - select a manufacturer to view
My BF would use C, and everybody else would be happy too!
This would be excellent to code into a module.
Also, we could make the Root Level of the category tree the Manufacturer ID.
This would solve that completely. This way everything that came under that root would be link to only that manufacturer.
